Narrowed Topic: Improving and providing education for girls in Nairobi, Kenya
The organization we chose to focus on is MYWO (Mandeleo Ya Wanawake Organization).
This organization trying their best to combat and change this issue by promoting a project about girl's education in 31 communities including Nairobi slums. The most important thing they are trying to do is raising public awareness about girls' education issues through the media. Also, they are implementing activities for girls' education such as:
Girls' clubs which provides the girls with reproductive health guidance and counseling
Giving the girls an opportunity to earn educational incentives and money for small school expenses through income generating activities
Developing a comic book about girls' education
Creating new themes focusing on girls’ education for the National Music Festival, which takes place every year in August. The music festival solicits original song entries from primary and secondary school choirs, and MYWO will award trophies for the best songs related to the project theme.
Working with the Family Planning Association of Kenya to integrate girls' education issues into the popular Youth Variety Show, which has raised public awareness about girls' education issues through several newspaper and magazine articles.
We like the way MYWO is trying to encourage the public to be involved and participate in this issue. They are putting up with activities like making clubs for girls, developing comic books about girls' education and health, and holding national festivals. I think these activities would draw people's attention easily, thus I believe that these methods would be very effective. Also, these activities allow the public to be involved in this crucial issue while having fun.
Meanwhile, we can become involved with this organization by suggesting the members of this organization that they could actually build schools for girls in Nairobi, Kenya near to the girls’ house. The nearer the house, the more probability will be given to the girls to go to school. And then our organization can raise some money to make this plan, building schools nearby the African girls' houses to be executed, by making advertisements with a video clip that tells about the situation of these girls who needs to get the primary education and that there's not enough money to execute this plan. Then more people will give some attention to it and also they'll start to participate and support the organization MYWO and help them give some good ideas and suggestions. Then, there will be financial aids raised by people all around the world, thus MYWO being able to build schools and provide education for girls in Africa more effectively.
